One of the most successful examples of regeneration in Britain has been developer Urban Splash's transformation of Britannia Basin in the Castlefield area of Manchester. A run-down warehouse district alongside the Bridgewater Canal has been transformed into a mixed-use, live/work community, masterplanned by Glenn Howells Architects and just minutes from Manchester city centre. In 2001, we won Urban Splash's architecture competition for a primarily residential scheme at Timber Wharf, which fronted Britannia Basin. It was Urban Splash's first new-build project and is now completed and incorporates their head office. The competition brief demanded a tight budget and innovative construction techniques. A precast concrete cross-wall structural system was used, which is flexible enough to allow for nine different apartment configurations.
