Whilst director and sole founder of Marraum, Michael was responsible for the conversion of a 1941 concrete barge, an abandoned relic of World War II. The project was a collaboration with Mark and Loz Shipwrights, commissioned by Robotmother, who came up with the idea of transforming the barge into a highly desirable floating office. Michael's visionary architectural skills came to the fore in the creation of an innovative design, which was robust, stylish and sustainable. The abandoned concrete hull of the historic barge was transformed into a unique and exciting office space, with biomass underfloor heating, a compost toilet and aluminium windows. The unusual sloping roof panels and bespoke lighting designed by Eleanor Bell all contributed to the stunning, original design. The completed barge, a tribute to the skills of many local craftspeople, is moored at Jubilee Wharf and is known as 'The Brain of Brian'.
