A new-build one-off private house to include an artist's studio. The concept was that of a traditional volume with render and pitched slate roof, with attic storey accommodation. The studio and the living room were conceived as timber drawers being pulled out of the main volume. The increased height required for the studio was accommodated by introducing a parapet to divide the pitch and flat roof elements. The house was passively orientated to make the best use of the external space creating a south facing garden. The studio was positioned at the front protected by the courtyard but positioned in the most public part of the house. The house's north elevation sits parallel with the road and views up and down the street provide new interest to by-passers. The site was a rear garden plot with full planning for a very poorly designed small bungalow. We put in a new planning application meeting the needs of our client. They say their dream has been realised.
