Within a Conservation Area, Alteration to existing property
Between the BBC’s Grade II listed Broadcasting House and Grade II* listed 26-30 Portland Place we extended and refurbished two buildings with a combined floor area of 31,000 sq ft. Slight variations in detailing across the existing facade betrayed the different dates and methods of construction of the buildings behind. 24a had been rebuilt in steel frame behind a retained façade in the 1980s, its irregular structural grid concealed behind low lay-in ceilings. 24 retained some of its original charm with ornate plaster ceilings and cornices. Our response celebrated this contrast, enhancing original elements in the old building and stripping back unnecessary clutter in the new. Open plan offices layered a fresh, muted palette of raw, natural and sustainable textures against new exposed services. Transitionary spaces drew on Art Deco influences with a modern interpretation of traditional materials and techniques incorporating leather, brass, stone and timber panelling to add harmony and luxury. The Edwardian style of the grand meeting spaces facing Portland Place was rejuvenated. Chimneys were re-purposed to quietly conceal new state of the art services whilst retaining decorative architectural features. At ground floor a series of small spaces were opened up to form a grand entrance and reception befitting a building of this stature.
