The University of Glasgow appointed HOK as Architect and Lead Consultant to design the new 16,000 sq m Research Hub at the institution’s 31-hectare Gilmorehill Campus. The £40m project provides a state-of-the-art facility for the university’s researchers to investigate significant global challenges including energy demand and waste management. The project is expected to be complete in 2019. In response to the university’s objectives, HOK’s design encourages cross-sector collaboration through the creation of a flexible environment that promotes interaction and lateral thinking. This significant new campus is a critical part of the university’s ‘Inspiring People, Changing the World: University Strategy 2015 – 2020’ and will enhance its position as one of the world’s leading broad-based research-intensive institutions. The Research Hub will be located on land released from the expansion to Glasgow’s Western Infirmary. HOK is providing design consultancy services for the project. The consultancy team is collaborating with WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, which has secured the multi-discipline engineering contract. Ironside Farrar is the planning consultant. “The Research Hub will have a focus on developing excellence in our cross-disciplinary research, providing space for new collaborations to flourish. Our aim is to deliver a design that encourages engagement between our leading researchers, and is also both flexible and agile, with the ability to be repurposed as new collaborations emerge. Beyond this, we envisage the building will become a focus for our most entrepreneurial staff, enabling industry collaboration and promoting innovation.” Professor John Cooper, Vice Principal, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange
