HOK International , 90 Whitfield Street , LONDON , W1T 4EZ , United Kingdom
HOK was lead architect for the new Papworth Hospital, a state-of-the-art cardiothoracic facility on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The new 310-bed hospital welcomes the community with a striking architectural form that reflects its park-like setting. By providing patients and family with a comforting, easy-to-navigate environment, the design helps reduce stress and anxiety. A parkland setting surrounds the building and features open, green spaces organised around a new pond which connects patients, family and staff to nature and supports the healing process. The layout of the new hospital promotes the Trust’s model of care by creating separate zones for ambulatory or outpatient care, emergency services and diagnostic and treatment functions. The clear separation of these areas creates an environment that is easy to navigate, streamlines admissions and allows for efficient patient transfers. The design of the new hospital can accommodate future growth of up to 11,000 sm.
