HOK were appointed by Skanska as Lead Architect for the £1.1 billion PFI redevelopment of Barts and The London Hospitals, providing full medical planning, architectural, interior and landscape design services for the scheme. The redevelopment saw the consolidation of cancer and cardiac services at Barts, with The Royal London serving as the primary acute hospital within the Trust. The Royal London is a new district general hospital for Tower Hamlets with specialist tertiary care services for patients from across London and beyond. Leading trauma and emergency care facilities are supported by the existing Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). The development will provide 145,300 sq m of new accommodation and a total of 905 beds. In addition it will provide London’s second largest paediatric service, within a dedicated Women and Children’s unit. The solution to build up, rather than spread out, condensed the development and improved adjacencies. The cluster of interconnected, contemporary glass buildings includes two 17-storey towers, one equipped with a helipad, and an additional 10-storey tower. Key to the redevelopment of the site was the requirement to maintain 100% clinical functionality with minimal disruption for the duration of the construction works.
