Formerly occupied by journalists and the studios of BBC News, Stage 6 at Television Centre (TVC) in White City, London has been transformed by HOK into the new headquarters for BBC Worldwide (BBCW), the main commercial arm of the BBC. Created to accommodate over 1,200 employees, this responsive work space provides an open and flexible environment that facilitates collaboration between different functions, whilst helping to increase knowledge of the BBC product. TVC has been referred to as the first ever television factory and with this in mind, the design team applied an industrial theme throughout the redevelopment process, leaving the structure and services of the interior of the building exposed to the public. A key aspect of the design was the removal of four lift cores from the centre of the building and their replacement by a striking spiral staircase. This has created a light-rich central atrium which provides both a main circulation route and a focus point where employees can meet. As the long-term headquarters for BBCW, it is imperative that the new space is responsive to workplace trends and future changes in workforce population. Accordingly, HOK has created a sustainable work environment, specifically designed to increase productivity, lower costs and improve sustainability.
