This classic double fronted Victorian ‘villa’ was refurbished and extended to transform the communal living spaces and create seamless transitions between internal rooms and external space. The project shows the power that design can have in elevating a property to new heights and the positive impact it brings to peoples' daily lives. The generously proportioned rear extension incorporates the kitchen, living and dining spaces to create spatial fluidity. Crowned with a sculptural ceiling made from rectangular aluminium panels, the design is modular and yet playful. The side extension facilitates practical living, allowing the typical bulk of domestic equipment to sit outside of the main house. A clarity of space within the main house is subsequently achieved as the building can take advantage of its true breadth. The architecture is bold in its simplicity and coupled internally with soft finishes, a balance is found between modern crispness and elegant comfort.
