Hodgkinson Design were the architects and designers for this Grade 2 Listed project to create a family home. The project required a total refurbishment, which included demolishing existing extensions and designing anew. Central to it was the reconstruction of a cantilevered stone staircase. Working with specialist structural engineers, we understood that the house had suffered bomb damage during World War Two resulting in the walls and stone staircase being badly out of line. We rebuild the landings and stairs back to their former glory. The house had poor extensions to the rear, which we rebuilt to create a basement study lit by rooflights, and a gym. On the ground floor, rooms face an enclosed courtyard that provides outdoor dining, including a breakfast room with full height glazed doors and a kitchen. The first floor reception, or piano nobile, has a balcony facing the street elevation and double doors leading to a book-lined library cum study; ideal for working from home. The refined design of the house with its period detailing allows the client’s extensive art collection to be the star of the show.
