Kensington Avenue is a primary school which is increasing from 2fE to 3FE. The project comprises a rationalisation of the existing sprawling site by the introduction of a new link building, relocation of existing children's centre to a new independant building, and remodelling of the existing buildings to provide reurbished teaching spaces as well as a new 12 place SEN Resource Base. The new teaching extension includes staff support spaces, a new ICT Suite, 3 Year 6 classrooms and a new entrance / reception area which orientates itself towards the new entrance off Buckingham Way. Due to the nature of the site and tight programme, the teaching extension was designed as a building which has been fabricated off-site in modules and then installed and finished over a period of 8 weeks over the 2012 summer, reducing the impact and disruption to a live school site. HLM worked together with the client and main contractor to select a modular contractor who could deliver the expected quality, while also designing a building which increases efficiency and driving down cost. Taking the scheme up to Stage D and Planning, HLM have been retained by the London Borough of Croydon as Client Design Advisor to ensure quality is maintained during the specialist manufacturers detailed design phase. This project is intended to be used as a prototype and benchmark for off-site construction within the Borough
