The masterplan has a clearly defined zoning Strategy to allow each part of the site to be designed and characterised, appropriate to its function; and for individual buildings and spaces to be designed to maximise their relationship with the site and its context. The Creek Area The Creek itself can have a somewhat disheveled appearance, especially at low water; but this gives the surrounding environs a strong character which can contribute positively to the scheme. The rather dilapadated boats moored adjacent to the site are an essential ingredient of this, and our proposal to create a landscaped walkway brings these elements into the character of the scheme. The Central Avenue and Piazza The Central Avenue is conceived as the ‘learning’ heart of the scheme; and is the principal point of entrance to the residential zone on one side, and the main University buildings. The Avenue is aligned on the strategic axis which extends at street level along the Creek to the Laban Centre and at high level to Canary Wharf beyond. The University Buildings The University Buildings sit between the new Central Avenue and Greenwich High Road; and are conceived as a series of buildings which are linked by inter-connecting bridges. This strategy responds to the prevailing scale of surrounding buildings, and the concept of the University as a series of ‘Institutes’ who provide specialist learning activities within a learning community.
