The project involved the creation of an iconic statement building consisting of a sports pavilion within the grounds of Millfield Preparatory School in Edgarley, Somerset. The building was to be located centrally with the existing facilities of the cricket pitch, hockey, netball and tennis courts with access to the rugby pitches. The principle concept was to provide a location for viewing all sports with easy accessibility and direct visual contrast. The building was designed with the key service elements to the ground floor consisting of changing rooms, stores, etc., and an open, spacious, flexible area to the first floor. The dramatic form of the building created to achieve a full 360º viewing experience combines the best of contemporary engineering with sustainable materials and renewable energy provision. The client was keen for the building process to cause minimum disruption to school activities and to limit access damage across existing sports facilities. It is due to open in August 2014.
