Within a Conservation Area, New Build
Hill Reading Architects Limited
Coach House Studio , 34 Chamberlain Street , Wells , Somerset , BA5 2PJ , United Kingdom
The Client's brief was to provide a space that visually links the house with the garden. The existing property is an extended Somerset long house with low beamed ceilings and traditional features such as an inglenook fireplace and small intimate rooms, and it is located within the Stone Allerton Conservation Area. The design concept was for the user to be led through the house into an unexpected series of glazed spaces which link physically and visually to the redesigned Garden to the rear. The existing rear area consisted of a raised lawn and stone wall and it was decided to drastically reduce the levels to grade the impact of the garden and introduce a more open feel. The use of powder coated aluminium and glass intentionally sets the extension against the traditional roughcast render and small, dark stained window frames, but it is the extent of glazing that allows the form to be light enough to avoid visual conflict.
