Oadby and Wigston
Within a Conservation Area
Studio B2.01, LCB Depot , 31 Rutland Street , Leicester , LE1 1RE , United Kingdom
Broomfeilds is a locally listed, grand Neo-Georgian house located on a prominent site within the Oadby Hill Top and Meadow Court Conservation Area. The property is constructed of a traditional Leicester red brick with stone detailing and white pointed joinery details. The brief required us to design a single-storey rear extension, on external lift shaft to provide accessible entry to the ground floor and first floor level, and three rooflights in the loft space. These changes will allow for full use of the house by an occupant with limited mobility. It was important that the proposal suited the character of the local conservation area and the existing property. This was reflected in the approach and materials used. For example, the proposal for the external lift was to use a timber frame and brickwork solution which mirrored components of the existing building, specifically the character window bays and the large brickwork chimneys.
