In "Best In Europe - Office" (2004) TalkBack was judged to be one of the five best new office buildings in Europe by an international panel of judges convened by the German architectural journal AIT. Prior to that, in 2002, the building won an RIBA Award for Architecture. The scheme brings together existing street and mews buildings with a new-build 2-storey link-block. It accommodates a core staff and production teams totalling about 250 people, a TV studio, two edit suites, a rehearsal space and meeting rooms. It takes its cue from a collegiate research environment, and the credits of a TV programme. The relationship between good environmental design and social engagement underpins this scheme. The windows in each facade of the courtyard have been replaced with doors opening onto a multi-storey cloister which is broad enough to meet and work on, connected by bridges that span between the buildings at second and third floor levels. This generates a focus for circulation and the life of the organisation, every office having direct access to the outside on each floor. In the centre a new 2-storey structure incorporates daylit and naturally ventilated offices and communal areas around a ground floor court. The new first floor roof becomes an aromatic & grassed garden accessible to all. Through the use of good daylighting, natural ventilation, night-time cooling, solar shading and an aromatic garden both the environment and the employees benefit from the design. The practice worked in conjunction with structural engineer Dewhurst MacFarlane, environmental engineer Fulcrum and cost consultant BPTW.
