The brief sought 210 ensuite student bedrooms for The University of Roehampton. The scheme is set in the gardens of the Georgian grade II* listed villa Downshire House which itself borders the LCC's renowned Modernist Alton West Estate (also grade II* listed). In the Twentieth Century the LLC's architects sought to co-opt the villas, like follies, into their utopian housing scheme overlooking Richmond Park. Our work here is informed by both of these traditions. Each residence employs a distinct plan type - two are villas, the third a Modernist pinwheel plan. Two are paired around an existing sunken garden. The third lies on axis with the sunken garden to the south of the house, completing an ensemble with the House that creates a theatre for the students£ social life in this sylvan and bucolic setting. Inside, rooms are clustered into apartments and terraced houses for groups of 6 to 12 students. Living spaces, depending on type, mark entrances or command fine views. Staircases eschew function alone, for example, the one in the South Residence recalls a lost stair in another nearby Georgian villa, Chambers' Parkstead House. Freestanding loadbearing brick facades incorporate balconies. They bear on the same foundation as the RC frame and are constructed independently of it. The brick is flush-pointed. Stringcourses, entablatures and parapets are precast concrete. This architecture of walls, trabeation and deep structural openings emphasise the monolithic and enduring properties of masonry, and buildings per se. The practice worked in conjunction with landscape architect Gross Max, structural engineers Buro Happold Engineering (pre contract) and Campbell Reith (post contract), M&E engineer Skelly & Couch, cost consultant Bernard Williams Associates, heritage consultant Steven Bee Urban Counsel, planning consultant Boyer Planning and PM Gardiner & Theobold. Chadwick Hall has been nominated for the EU Mies Award 2019, and was shortlised for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2018.
