Hazle McCormack Young have been appointed by the Charitable Trust, Emmaus, to make significant improvements across the existing 13th century fort site. This will include remediation of existing historic structures, replacement of key buildings to the operation of the trust, including new workshop and storage facilities, a new retail unit, refurbishment of existing building stock and rationalisation of external areas including new parking areas and alterations to the existing accesses. The development sits on an English Heritage scheduled monument site located on the western heights of Dover, sitting between the A20 and the English Channel. The proposals comprise of a new retail extension for the general public, a new shop office located within the existing showroom area, roof enhancements to the existing showroom building, a new external workshop facility along with enhancements to the two existing dwellings and modernisation to external signage, car park and access routes including a new picnic area for the staff and general public to use. Extensive consultations have been carried out with English Heritage and DDC Planning both on and off site in order to ascertain the most acceptable way forward with the remediation and renovation works and for the new buildings.
