Old Mullions is a Grade II listed dwelling sitting on the edge of the central green in a South Warwickshire village, dating from the 17th Century. With local natural stone walls under plain tile roofs, the existing property had a 1970’s single storey extension to the rear which was considered unsafe and needed removal. Through discussions with the Local Authority Conservation Officer, Hayward Smart were able to obtain planning and listed building consent for single and 1.5 storey extensions to the rear to provide improved kitchen, dining and utility spaces at ground floor and a bathroom to the gabled extension at first floor. The contemporary design of the extension, whilst contrasting the traditional house, sits harmoniously within the context. Large expanses of glass allow direct contact with the garden as well as ensuring the stonework of the rear wall of the property are maintained on view. Expressed structure and controlled, high quality detailing of finishes ensure an overall composition that preserves and enhances the setting of the existing building.
