Old Manor is a Grade II* listed house in a village on the edge of the Cotswolds AONB, near Chipping Campden. Our clients, who had lived in the property for several years, asked us to prepare designs for an extension to replace a very small gabled structure that housed a kitchen much too small for their family home. It also lacked any meaningful connection with the garden and it was important for our clients to have a space where their young children could play outside and be seen from the kitchen. The modest single storey extension with open plan kitchen and living space, provides a positive addition to the listed property by using local natural Cotswold stone and an expressed Oak post and beam structure with frameless glazed units and slim-framed sliding doors with modern detailing to allow the extension to stand apart as a new element on the timeline of the property. The roof of the extension is covered in a black zinc standing-seam finish and where the extension meets the rear elevation of the house, a strip of lean-to glazing provides additional headroom internally and a sensitive connection to the historic stonework. The extension is intentionally transparent to provide views through the new structure of the existing rear wall of the house. In addition to the kitchen extension, the scheme included a detached garden studio to provide a home working space and garden store. The studio is clad in random width vertical Oak boards with metal framed window and doors, complementing the materiality of the kitchen extension. The theme of random width boards is continued internally using reclaimed timber to clad the walls.
