The radical re-organisation of the accommodation pivots around a new external courtyard and glazed box in the centre of this traditional Victorian plan and section. This ‘void’ creates a point of connection to all the new spaces within the 4.5m width of a typical inner-London plot; separating the remodelled living spaces from the newly-created fashion photographer’s studio and roof terrace. The material strategy for the remodelling of the lower floors of the property is to create a ‘language of intervention’; a series of carefully-crafted, timber-lined objects inserted in between the existing walls that define the boundaries of the tight plot. Rubberwood blockboard is used to create a bespoke staircase that houses the WC and storage underneath and then wraps round to form the kitchen. The slatted timber ceiling in the lobby continues into the studio to create three floating forms; the structural glazing in the gaps between objects sculpting the way natural light enters the space. In addition to providing function, the timber-linings are designed to carve out new visual connections between the remodelled cellular arrangement of rooms – visual connections that provide glimpses, intrigue and a physical device to fundamentally re-navigate the Victorian plot.
