The Billboard LAB is a pioneer in modern British design and engineering. This portable multi-media studio takes the form of a converted shipping container that slides apart to reveal a fully-functioning filming suite with editing facilities and a separate diary room. At 10 metres long and 3.5 metres high the eye-catching, pillar-box-red media LAB is the first of its kind to be commissioned in the UK. The Billboard Lab is kitted out with video equipment to create a professional shooting environment. Portable shooting kits also allow young people to go out ‘on the road’ to interview members of their community as part of the project. Full broadband access and a bank of laptops help young people communicate their work through the billboard project website – a hub for young people’s involvement in the regeneration of their towns and cities as part of Thames Gateway Development. We designed and co-ordinated the interior fit-out and the design of the bespoke furniture. The rubberised colour floor was designed to indicate the movement through the two units at the same time as matching the graphic style of the whole project. The 24 'liquorice' stools were developed with product designers, Blend Studios; these were made from expanded polypropylene and are hard-wearing enough to be stacked and re-stacked in many different configurations.
