The proposal was to rebuild and expand the school, on the same site, from the current 1.5 FE to a 3 FE with a 72 place nursery and 2yr old provision. Community and school consultation was a key aspect of the design development. The new build now supports the school’s vision for learning by providing the best learning experience for the whole school community, each classroom provides transformational learning complimented by a series of shared and group spaces. Spaces are designed so that they do not restrict innovative use and allowing for flexibility of use over time. Tufnell Park is our first fully modular building which was chosen due to programme and site constraints. The modules were delivered and installed within 5.5 weeks and the threestory building was watertight with the majority of internal finishes complete in less than 1.5 months! We worked closely with the modular building specialist contractor to fine-tune, co-ordinate and deliver a new school that meets EFA affordability requirements and Building Bulletin standards. The new building now gives the school a rich visual presence. The building gives a positive civic presence through the refined used of materials and colours. The material palate of high quality bricks and stone bands directly relates to the language of neighbouring buildings, cementing its place in this conservation area. The proposals embrace the significant landscaped setting and the ‘Site of Importance for Nature Conservation’ classification. Despite increasing in capacity, the building footprint is smaller than the current arrangements, which allows the play space and interaction with the landscape to be absolutely maximised, including roof space as play terraces.
