New Build

Harrington Design Architects Limited , St. Johns House , St. Johns Street , CHICHESTER , West Sussex , PO19 1UU
The new Bristow-Clavell Science Centre is an important facility for learning and discovery; providing state of the art laboratories, and ensuring the new building respected the historic fabric of the surrounding context. The finished building has framed the northern face of Portsmouth Grammar School's celebrated Quad, while remaining sympathetic to the historical curtilage of buildings beyond. The open atrium which draws together all three sciences provides a dramatic focal point for the building, and breakout spaces encourage group discussion and debate as well as independent study, while the dedicated science lecture theatre provides the perfect venue for evening forays into popular science across the city. Achieving the right level of acoustics was a significant challenge. With the proximity to roads and the open atrium breakout spaces, attention to detail was key for creating the right learning environment. Sustainable features include solar panels at roof level and the pulling in of fresh air to naturally ventilate the laboratories; in addition, cooling the atrium using a stack effect connected to a high level rooflight acting as a passive vent.
