MSCP, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London Haptic have completed the recladding of the MSCP in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Originally won through an invited design competition, the project is a collaboration between the architects, Eckersley O’Callaghan (engineering), Bob Design (graphic design) and Stockdale (QS). The proposal seeks to enhance the relationship between the MSCP and the ever-changing QEOP context, in particular the Lea Navigation Canal where the reflective quality of the powder coated aluminium facade creates an interesting interplay on the water. The cladding modules have been designed with a strong triangular geometry, which projects in plan and section to provide variety in depth, colour and light. The aluminium itself has been powder coated with subtly different shades to further pronounce this geometry and create a movement across each façade. The façade has a graphic-like quality, ever changing when viewed from different angles and at different times of the day. The triangular sections extend out further on the southern elevation, creating a variety of openings and alternating rhythm, demarking crossing points from Here East (Hawkins Brown). Super-graphics label each core at large scale and indicate lift or stair access using subtle graphic cutaways in the letterforms.
