New Build
Hamilton House , 3 Joy Street , Belfast , County Antrim , BT2 8LE , United Kingdom
The £30m Erne Campus of South West College in Enniskillen is officially the first educational – and currently the largest – Passive House Premium rated building in the world. This new, 8,000sqm art, education and community facility is located on the former Erne Hospital site, off the Cornagrade road, and offers panoramic views over the town centre on the other side of the River Erne. Accommodation includes 1,360m2 of traditional teaching space, over 650m2 of office and storage space, 7 meeting/interview rooms totalling 135m2, and 170m2 of student and staff social space. Nearly 100m2 is devoted to reception, health, creche and changing facilities, and some 800m2 to kitchen, food training and restaurant facilities. Around 1,500m2 is given over to Open Learning, tech, IT, business and lecture theatre spaces. As a landmark building it sets a new benchmark for educational buildings in Northern Ireland, ranking alongside prestigious buildings such as the Apple Campus 2, California in terms of sustainable innovation and design. A challenging project due to its sheer size and complexity, it required a lot of services and very high standards of insulation and airtightness which had to be monitored to be monitored throughout the building process. The sustainability strategy included photo voltaic panels on the roof, heat exchangers, biofuel boiler, water collection and recycling, and electric car charging points in the car parks. As a result, South West College will enjoy very low energy usage, particularly in heating costs, which will reduce to practically zero.
