As part of its next phase of evolution, this 1870's house, originally associated with the adjacent historic Silk Works, anticipates a contemporary rejuvenation. The existing structure, burdened by an outdated layout and convoluted circulation, calls for a modern reimagination. The redevelopment unfolds with a contemporary extension, introducing a generous kitchen-dining area and light-filled main entrance. Purposefully modern in design, the extension stands as a distinctive yet harmonious companion to the historic host dwelling. Strategic repositioning of the front door and relocation of the staircase create an intuitive flow within. However, the centrepiece of the design emerges in the form of the brand-new kitchen diner which seamlessly connects to the garden. For continuity, its architectural form mimics the rhythm of the pitched roofs of the existing house. It is clad in dramatic black timber, and sits upon a reinforced concrete plinth. The materials contrast with the existing house, further reinforcing the readability of the new addition against the existing house.
