Carolina Street is the redevelopment of an existing canal-side site to provide 16 flats and 23 family houses for rent. The site had been previously used for industries, it had been cleared for parking and required decontaminating. The design reflects the requirements for higher density and a presence on the canal-side. Four storey flats and three storey terraced housing maintain the height to the canal and the two storey housing towards Carolina Street relates to the existing housing on adjacent sites. The saw-tooth roof profile reflects the former canal-side warehouses and maximises the views of the canal. All the properties are fitted with brise-soleil and balconies to reduce solar gain to the living rooms. The houses employ natural ventilation techniques and the flats have been fitted with photovoltaic cells which supply power to the communal areas. The design and landscaping of the scheme provide a mix of family housing which are contemporary and maximise the canal-side location.
