Shawfair Park Hospital is a new build hospital in Midlothian for Spire Healthcare, the second biggest provider of private healthcare in the UK. The new building was a flagship development for Spire and provided a new clinical facility with a functional, modern design. The complex programme of accommodation, including operating theatres, a diagnostic suite and IVF and physiotherapy facilities, was planned around a double height glazed entrance lobby. The internal spaces were designed to incorporate natural materials and full height windows to maximise daylight, creating a light and airy atmosphere for both patients and staff. Externally, the elevations—clad in white render and copper panels—were designed to reflect the local vernacular in a contemporary way.
