Listed Building - Grade II*
Halliday Meecham Architects Ltd
Halliday Meecham Architects Ltd , Rodwell Tower , 111 Piccadilly , MANCHESTER , M1 2HY
Asia House is a Grade II* listed former packing and shipping warehouse built for the Refuge Assurance Company in the Edwardian Baroque style. The iron frame is clad in brown sandstone ashlar and buff brick on a polished granite plinth. Halliday Meecham Architects led the sensitive conversion of the building for residential use. The two halves of the trapezoidal plan were connected by the introduction of an atrium space onto which the 166 apartments and a leisure club were accessed. The design team worked closely with English Heritage to retain and restore original features. Of particular importance was the elaborate interior—one of the best examples of its kind in an any Manchester warehouse—which includes a tiled porch and corridor with ionic pilasters and Venetian windows of glazed green terracotta and Art Nouveau stained glass.
