Llandegfedd Visitor Centre forms the centrepiece of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water’s £3m investment at the reservoir site in South Wales. Following a two-stage competition, Hall + Bednarczyk’s design was chosen by the board of Welsh Water and the practice led the project through detailed design and construction. The design of the 500m2 visitor centre captures its setting and has dramatically increased annual visitor numbers to 150,000. Approached from above, it . Sited at the water’s edge, the two-storey building is approached from above and presents the sinuous roof form as a fifth elevation resembling a fluid rectangular gulp taken from the reservoir. The design places visitor facilities on the first floor, offering panoramic views. A café and exhibition space address the reservoir, with a service spine of public WC’s and a kitchen/servery arranged to ensure uncluttered public space that can spill out on to a generous balcony. The ground floor provides offices, staff changing rooms and a reception area for rangers to welcome reservoir users. Winner of 2016 RIBA Wales Building of the Year and the National Eisteddfod's Gold Medal for Architecture.
