New Build
The Coach House , 29 Kedleston Road , Derby , DE22 1FL , United Kingdom
Founded in 1710, the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society is a provincial society unique in western Europe for its longevity. Its museum includes artefacts spanning several millennia; archival materials date from the medieval period; and there is a significant library. The Society aims to build on its 300-year ideals as represented in the 1955 Memorandum of Association, sustained by the active participation of its members. The museum building on Broad Street has been owned and maintained by the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society since 1911. In 2017, Guy Taylor Associates was commissioned to provide designs for a new extension to the museum, together with proposals for re-ordingering existing exhibition space. Museum facilities include permanent display areas, temporary exhibition space, a lecture theatre, storage for the widely varying needs of the museum artefacts, library and archives, staff offices, a meeting/education room, new toilet facilities and a shop / reception area. The project was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
