Conversion of a modern agricultural storage barn into a two-storey family home with views over rolling Bucks countryside. Previously refused both planning permission and a subsequent appeal on design grounds, we were commissioned to take a fresh look at the project and gained planning permission in July 2023. We developed a design that sensitively balances the rural character of the setting with the more industrial appearance of the immediate cluster of modern agricultural sheds. The design references surrounding industrial materials whilst incorporating distinctly agricultural features and details. Panels of open timber cladding reference the neighbouring barn and screen the first-floor accommodation, whilst storey-height sliding screens reference existing roller shutters. The existing steel frame is retained and expressed externally, where it is used to support the timber screens and roof. Inside the existing structure a new super-insulated, highly airtight envelope is created. This new envelope is set behind the timber cladding to a varying degree depending on the orientation to provide the optimum level of solar shading. This avoids excess solar gain in summer and reduces heating costs in winter. The house will incorporate renewable technologies including a Ground Source Heat Pump and photovoltaic (solar) panels to the south slope of the existing roof. These measures will further reduce the carbon generated by use of the house.
