New Build
John Dobson House , 49 New Bridge Street West , Newcastle upon Tyne , NE1 8AN
‘A contemporary addition to a historic warehouse ’ Gilbert Gilkes and Gordon (Gilkes) have a long and proud history of producing water pumps and turbines in Kendal since 1881. Over that time the historic factory has been extended many times to suit the needs of a successful and expanding business. In the 21st Century the business is now increasingly focussed on research and development which has led to worldwide success and subsequent growth of the business. GT3 Architects were commissioned to design an inspiring new workspace to provide modern facilities to reflect the progressive, innovative character of the business, whilst showcasing the heritage of the original building. The design proposals involved substantial alterations to the existing Victorian buildings along with a new extension to create a flexible and stimulating office environment, enhanced R&D facilities, a new arrival point and social spaces for staff. The proposals evolved through a rigorous and forensic analysis of existing spaces and structures, designed to reveal and celebrate the historic layers of the buildings whilst simultaneously adding a new contemporary layer. The end result is a truly unique workplace – one that captures the history of this remarkable company but simultaneously reflects its role at the cutting edge of developments in the hydro-energy industry.
