New Build
We were appointed alongside Sir Robert McAlpine to deliver Durham University’s new Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science Building, within the grounds of the Upper Mountjoy Campus, which forms part of the masterplan to provide improved infrastructure and additional teaching and research spaces. This cutting-edge new building provides office space for both professors and PhD students, in addition to having a number of specialist laboratories, including a Heavy-Duty and an Open IT Lab with designated server room. The building also houses a 120-seat tiered lecture theatre, tutorial rooms, café, flexible event space, enterprise hub, meeting rooms and breakout spaces. Having had a close working relationship with the University for over 20 years, we have an in-depth understanding of their key requirements and long-term strategies, which was a great benefit throughout the delivery of this key building. The sustainable focus of the project encouraged a fabric first approach to design, with the aim of achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating through the use of photovoltaic panels, natural ventilation and other sustainable practices.
