A refurbishment and extension at South Shields Crematorium has been completed and has increased the building capacity by 126, to over 200 people overall. Working alongside South Tyneside Council, Ward Robinsons and Surgo Construction, our plans for the 1960s building involved extending into the existing internal courtyard, rearranging pews to provide better sight lines and creating a partition between the existing chapel and the extension, which would be utilised when required for smaller services. In addition, the plans included a full refurbishment and redecoration of the existing chapel, entrance and exit lobby and waiting area to provide a modern facility for services. Collaboration with the rest of the project team has been essential in order to ensure disruption to services was minimised where possible throughout the refurbishment period.
