This project was won in competition for a strategic masterplan to be led by Lewisham and then the design of the central and key side directly for landowners. The masterplan entails both a strategic vision for Lewisham and several wharf sites. The spatial framework, discussed through a complex set of stakeholders meetings and exhibitions, used the route of the historic canal as a new linear park to act as a north south connector. This permeability both linked adjoining sites to strategic transport and amenities and reformed the connector that once formed the urban grain. Sites to the east and west were also joined by new routes meeting at the old canal head where a new retail space is located. Character areas were allocated as either canal side ( wharf architecture ) or dock streets running parallel. To the perimeter of all sites is lower, domestic terraces. Marine Wharf architecture uses the bulk form of timber wharves but in steel. working back from the canal the site adopts more brick. The urban form is a series of perimeter blocks above ground floor entrances and car parking. Private and affordable housing is provides and a large extra care facility is integrated with the streets and squares.
