This scheme to refurbish the Tiverton Pannier Market building and construct a new pedestrian priority urban landscape has reinvigorated the commercial heart of the Tiverton. The existing popular victorian market building in the heart of a Devon market town was constructed of cast iron and timber. During the twentieth century the building was altered in piecemeal fashion, and the fortunes of the surrounding town square ebbed. By 2000, the square was a car park, and the pannier market was in poor condition. The local authority, Mid Devon District Council, instigated a regeneration programme. Grainge Architects were appointed Masterplanners and Architects to the scheme. Grainge Architects have a strong track record of successful briefing with community groups. The involvement of the existing market traders and a public consultation was imperative in designing and managing a construction project around the existing market traders.
