Academic facility with 'living roof' combining digital media centre, lecture theatres, laboratories and college administration areas. Grainge Architects were appointed by CUC via a design & build procurement process to redesign an earlier scheme which had obtained planning but was too expensive. The practice worked in conjunction with a contractor and university user groups to create a value engineered scheme which saved in excess of £2M and was submitted to planning with officer recommendation for approval. The new affordable design maintained the accommodation and space standards required by the users. Care was taken at all stages to ensure that the Client aspirations were achieved. The project was managed to a clear set of milestones which enabled it to be delivered ahead of schedule and below budget. Although positioned on a challenging site the construction timescale for this £13.5 M project was 15 months to deliver a building which is seen by the users as an excellent addition to the facilities at Tremough.
