23a North Bar Within , Beverley , East Yorkshire , HU17 8DB , United Kingdom
GBA were commissioned to create a new beach front café at Fraisthorpe, on the East Coast of Yorkshire overlooking the North Sea. The site was occupied by basic toilet facilities for beach users in the ancient barns on the Eastern edge of the client’s farm land. The existing barns were typically modest relative to their age and use, with large timber trusses and thick stone and brick walls. We wanted to reflect this simple utilitarian structure by leaving it exposed within the proposed lounge and kitchen areas which will fit into the existing areas. Further to the renovation of the existing structures our proposals were centered on a modern extension to form the main dining area looking out to sea. The new extension was designed as an echo of the existing barns using similarly industrial but modern techniques that will also remain exposed. The new extension is connected to the existing barns with a flat roofed link with over hangs that form the entrance areas and be the hub of the café.
