The New Sports Complex at the Schools of King Edward VI Camp Hill provides a functional, flexible, and attractive facility which provides a great asset to the schools existing facilities and provides a landmark building for the school. The building is strongly integrated into the landscape; using an existing avenue of trees leading from the car park of the Boys School to form a link to the development which is located within a pocket of woodland which has been identified as a “Site of Local Interest for Nature Conservation” (SLINC) by the local authority. The public entrance to the sports hall is via a new road running to a new car park sited within the wooded area. Both school and general public enter the building through a main reception area which connects to the “street” (the spine of the building which will allow future development if required). The sports hall is designed to Sport England recommendations and is sized to provide county standard facilities providing 6 badminton courts, 2 practice basketball courts, volleyball, netball, football, tennis, indoor hockey and cricket. The hall is capable of separation into two halves with individual access from boys and girls changing areas. There is also provision for the installation of retractable seating which will allow spectator viewing of matches and other functions. There are two 40 pupil changing spaces each for boys and girls with separate shower areas. These changing rooms can also be used for outdoor activities and external entrance/exits are provided with boot areas to contact dirt. The first floor of the building provides access to the retractable seating areas of the hall and has a café area which overlooks the boy’s school rugby and cricket pitches via an external terrace. There are two teaching spaces at this level which are separated by a demountable partition which allows the space to be opened up during events for entertainment etc. There is also a fitness suite adjacent to the classroom areas.
