The Hereford Cathedral School Project brief required a much-needed new build sports hall facility with refurbishment of existing adjacent Science block building to provide changing, shower, and toilet block facilities. With restrictive site constraints, adjacent listed buildings, and historic surroundings, the design transitions between new building and existing required a delicate and thoughtful approach. The materials were chosen to give a modern yet sympathetic architectural impact with the use of circular glazed features to both front and rear of the sports hall building to provide both circulation and design transition between new and existing building links. The use of brickwork with translucent cladding exterior with an integrated natural ventilation system provides a naturally lit, enhanced interior sporting environment. The building was orientated to form the internal courtyard which has been landscaped to form a relaxing usable external space for both pupils and staff.
