Alteration to existing property
Glazzard Architects Ltd , Graingers Porcelain Works , Unit 9, St Martins Quarter, Silver Street , Worcester , Worcestershire , WR1 2DA , United Kingdom
Redevelopment of existing farm buildings with new-build accommodation to form a collection of versatile, high-quality event spaces and overnight accommodation . The masterplan is defined by the existing farmstead and cowshed, which act as the organising elements for the site and frames key views across Badley Wood Common. This strategy reinforces a strong connection to the surrounding landscape, with the accommodation discreetly set into the ground to follow the natural topography and reduce its visual impact. The function facilities responds directly to the isolated rural context, drawing on the core characteristics of the agricultural vernacular. Familiar forms and proportions are reinterpreted at a larger scale, allowing the new buildings to sit comfortably within the existing farmstead while presenting a more refined and coherent alternative to the agricultural sheds they replace. Architecturally, the proposal is expressed as a series of simple, open-span, duo-pitched volumes with fully glazed gable ends, all orientated to capture expansive views across the Herefordshire landscape. A restrained palette of stained black cedar gives the buildings a robust, tactile quality, balancing tradition with a contemporary clarity. The result is a set of carefully composed interventions that integrate sensitively with their surroundings while remaining distinctly modern.
