Listed Building - Grade II*
Gilmore Hankey Kirke Ltd (GHK)
5 Port House, Square Rigger Row , Plantation Wharf , London , SW11 3TY
The UK Supreme Court replaces the Appelate Committee of the House of Lords and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and is housed in the Grade II* listed Middlesex Guildhall on Parliament Square which has been completely refurbished including contemporary mechanical, electrical and electronic services. The £35M project to convert the Guildhall includes two Courts in existing courtrooms, a third in a new, modern double height space and a new law library. There are also suites of offices for the justices and their staff and meeting and changing rooms for visiting advocates. In keeping with the intended transparency of the court, there is a public exhibition space and accessible café. Two lightwells, one of which had been largely infilled in the 1980’s, have been refurbished and glazed over to create dramatic new internal spaces. GHK acted as design team leaders to Kier Property and Wallis as developer and contractor respectively. We discharged all planning and listed building conditions and other statutory obligations. The Ministry of Justice commissioned the project and appointed Kier Property as developer in 2006 and it was handed over on-time in March 2009.
