Many of the buildings at Atlantic College date from the early 1960's when the college was established by Kurt Hahn. Since that time many illustrious students have graduated and it is appropriate that this project was largely funded by the generous donations of a former resident, Mr Pentie Currie of Finland. The building is a student dormitory and was badly in need of maintenance and repair. The college governors took the decision to go one step further and carry out a low energy refurbishment. Gillard Associates produced a scheme which removed the house from the oil fired heating main, introduced a completely new heating system based on ground sorce heat, with mechanical ventilation. The energy predictions are that the building will consume at least 90% less energy for space heating. University of Wales Institute Cardiff is carrying out systematic monitoring of the building to ascertain the efficacy of the energy saving measures. If these are found to be worthwhile, the college will roll out the comcept to the remainder of the three identical student houses on the site.
