Conversion of a car repair garage into a 140m² studio for an artist. The design is a direct response to the existing site which was severely compromised by a deep plan with a lack of any natural light or ventilation. A new facade with bi-fold doors and high level windows sits behind an existing roller shutter, creating a heated and insulated interior. Further day light is grabbed from a previously hidden light-well and from two former blocked up vents at the back of the space. The existing slab was uneven, sloping 150mm front to back. It was impregnated with 30 years of engine oil and peppered with network of petrol interceptor chambers. These chambers have been back filled. The slab dug has been dug out out to increase head height. It is replaced with a new polished slab. Existing linings have been stripped out. New insulated and fire rated walls and ceilings have been built to an art gallery specification. Good visibility is maintained from the main studio space at the front to a workshop area at the rear, separated by a large timber and glass screen. The emphasis is on making a robust working space with a sense of the domestic. It is a lab for experimentation and artistic production; with utilitarian fittings and fixtures, carefully considered.
