Private House Alterations, Cambridge. As well as providing additional guest accommodation to this large 1950’s house, the brief was to improve the existing building visually, ergonomically, and rationally. A new entrance, separate guest rooms and new vertical circulation have been built to the front of the house, replacing an ungainly porch and an awkward, intrusive stairwell. The new work comprises a terne-coated steel clad, timber framed structure, full height glazing to the new entrance & stairwell, and new windows throughout the existing house with a natural, lime based render to the existing front elevation. There are further extensive alterations internally, and solar thermal roof panels for water heating and a new high efficiency boiler are also incorporated. The resulting building responds to its context and articulates its use by creating a variety of visual and spatial experiences, giving character and interest with its materials, use and control of natural light and interplay of different geometries.
