Artist’s studio, Devon. Built on a compact site between two existing structures this new building squeezes itself between a small carport and a two-storey, barn style, house. The studio, in part, takes its visual form from the workshop it replaces. The transition from the two geometries of house and studio produces a timber & zinc clad pop-up lightwell structure, articulating the studio entrance & providing further natural lighting (the all essential north light) to the studio interior. The new building uses breathing wall/roof construction techniques, together with thermal mass, to maintain a comfortable internal environment. The studio is built using a solid interlocking thin bed clay block system (its cellular construction providing insulation) finished with mineral render & plaster. Its roof is tiled with natural (recycled) slate. The entrance/lightwell is an insulated timber frame with green oak board cladding and a zinc clad roof.
