Back in 2020, we got an email with the subject line “A Gallery for Living” – a new enquiry from clients in York. It immediately sparked our imagination, and we couldn’t wait to get started. Fast forward three years: the house was bought, taken apart, thoughtfully redesigned, and carefully put back together. The project includes a light-filled kitchen extension, a series of verandas outside, a garden studio, energy-efficient upgrades, new windows, and openings that frame lovely views of the mature garden and bring light right through the heart of the house. Inside, the atmosphere is calm, warm, and simple. Built-in furniture helps shape the different areas and how they’re used. A new staircase doubles as a bookcase, holding the clients’ treasured books and art pieces – and it leads up to a peaceful first-floor gallery, lit from above by a rooflight that gently illuminates the centre of the home. From the outside, it looks like a modest suburban home. But once you step inside, it quietly unfolds – a beautiful, personal space filled with family life, meaningful objects, and a love of art and design.
