Completed in October 2019 the new footbridge over the River Aire in Leeds is a new piece of infrastructure that connects two sides of the city within the Climate Innovation District. This relatively modest project is an example of what is achievable through ambitious design, collaborative working, good clients, dialogue and engaging wider stakeholders; the result is a stunning addition to Leeds’ riverfront and an exemplar of high-quality, sustainable placemaking in the region. Gagarin Studio & DP Squared have introduced a stunning new footbridge at the Climate Innovation District, straddling the River Aire, the new bridge is a key element in the vision for this area creating a much needed pedestrian link for existing and future residents whilst enabling the delivery of low carbon heating via a planned district heat network to the South Bank and City Centre. In the long term, the bridge will connect both part’s of Citu’s development to construct 500 new low carbon homes; in the short term, it is already providing access to the river bank for the first wave of new residents, the early adopters in this ambitious plan that is the Climate Innovation District. The bridge now in place, skilfully navigates significant constraints and technical demands whilst providing both the North and South Bank with a high-quality piece of placemaking that is both beautiful and contextual. The bridge was opened in October 2019 by a large group of residents alongside Leeds MP, Hilary Benn who went on to describe it as a ‘bridge to a low carbon future’. The project was awarded the inaugural National Infrastructure Award for Design Innovation in 2020.
